Great Houghton Preparatory School (GHPS) was founded in 1955.
The school building is a large Georgian house surrounded by twenty-six acres of grounds just two and a half miles from the centre of Northampton. Northamptonshire County Council is the appropriate local education authority.
The main aim of the school is to bring out the best in everyone. This includes academic success; sporting prowess; excellence in music, art and drama; and all-round qualities such as courtesy, honesty and integrity. The boys and girls are the school’s best advertisement. “You only have to look at the happy, well-balanced and extremely talented children that GHPS produces to know you’ve made the right choice.”
GHPS is a well established school with many strengths, combining a very broad, inclusive approach with specialist expertise. The emphasis of the school is on the encouragement of the whole child; via assemblies that are Christian in ethos, in the classroom, on the games field, in relationships and through responsibilities.
Children develop confidence and courtesy, self-discipline and self knowledge in a happy, purposeful environment, enjoying an outstanding staff:pupil ratio of 1:9. Our most recent ISI report observed that our pupils 'are notably well behaved, polite and hard working'.
